8/19/16 Golf Shop News

First off this week we all want to extend our deepest condolences to Josh Snider and his family as he lost his mother, Judy, yesterday.  For those interested in supporting Josh in this most difficult of times, the visitation will be Monday August 22^nd from 2pm-8pm at Newcomer Funeral Home (235 Juneau Dr Middletown).  He and his family our in our thoughts and prayers.   Memorial contributions can be made to Hosparus of Louisville or The Alzheimer’s Association.

 

 

We also would like to wish Keith Kulwicki a found fair well & good luck as he is leaving Oxmoor to purse another opportunity outside of golf.  He has been a great asset to the Golf Staff team and he will most certainly be missed.  Please wish him well when you see him this weekend.

 

In Golf news, we are very excited to have the Oxmoor Ladies Club Championship this weekend.  We are hoping that once again the forecasters are wrong in their weather predictions and that we have a great weekend of golf.  Tee times for the ladies are as follows:

You may have received my email about the PGA Golf Day 100 Holes of Golf for Charity event that I am hosting on September 16^th here at Oxmoor.  Myself, David & Josh will be getting in 100 Holes of Golf in 1 day to raise money for The Food Literacy Project at Oxmoor Farm & The KY Golf Foundation.  Please try and support these two great charities in any way you can.

I am very excited to announce that the inaugural Oxmoor CC Biggest Loser Handicap Reduction Challenge has concluded and we have a winner!  Kevin Aldred lowered his handicap by 31% over the course of the 12 week program, Bruce Kramer was the net Biggest Loser with a 16% decrease in handicap.  Great fun was had by all, hopefully, and I look forward to next years’ program.

Congrats to Kevin! He gets his choice of new Vokey wedges or a Scotty Cameron Putter for his win!

Upcoming Golf Events

1. Ladies Club Championship, Sat. & Sun., August 20th & 21st.  Signup in the Golf Shop for the flighted stroke play event.  Tee times will begin at 9:00 am both days.

2. Golf Guest Day, Fri. Aug., 26th - Make a tee reservation to bring guest out for just $35 including cart rental!

3. Couples Glow Ball, Fri. Aug., 26th - 7:00 PM Start - Join us for an evening on the links played with LED golf balls.  This 9-hole event will begin with a dinner prior to play as well as a couple putting challenge before getting teeing it up under the light of the moon.  The entry fee is $50 per couple and members are encouraged to make their own pairings.

3. Greenskeeper Revenge, Sun., Aug. 28th - Bring your favorite foursome for a fun event on the golf course supporting our Superintendent and his staff while raising funds to improve the beauty of our course.  The entry fee is just $60 per person/$240 per team and you can become a revenge hole sponsor, which includes a team, for just $400.  Please contact the golf shop if you would like to sign-up.

2016 PGA Golf Day- 100 Holes of Golf event at Oxmoor CC benefitting The Food Literacy Project at Oxmoor Farm

Dear Friends,

We, the Golf Professional staff at Oxmoor CC, have committed to playing 100 holes of golf in one day. Our goal is to raise money for Kentucky PGA REACH initiatives and The Food Literacy Project at Oxmoor Farm. Our fun challenge will take place on Friday September 16th. Following play that day we will also be hosting a "Farm to Table" wine dinner for members & guests featuring items provided by Oxmoor Farm, a portion of those proceeds will be donated to PGA Golf Day as well. 

I have pledged $1 per hole ($100) and hope you can follow my lead. Your pledge of $1 or $2 per hole would be greatly appreciated and will go a long way toward a great cause. If you want to donate a specific dollar amount, you can do that as well.

OCC E-News

Please Note:

1.      Saturday, August 6^th – The golf course will be unavailable for member play due to an OLGA Member-Guest Tournament in the morning and a member sponsored corporate event in the afternoon.  The practice green, short game facility and practice range will be open for member use throughout the day.

2.      Saturday, August 6^th – The dining room and clubhouse will be CLOSED for member dining due to private parties.  We apologize for the inconvenience but also are thankful for our members to look to their Club to host private functions!

 

Golf Course Update:

 

A couple months ago we experienced a disease known as Leaf Spot, bipolaris, on 18 green.  After the heavy rainfall and humidity of the summer, we are now seeing this same disease throughout the rest of the course.  We are well applied with treatments to the greens and tees, but I feel it may get worse before it gets better just as 18 did.  I have never seen this disease in my 17 years at Oxmoor, so we have never treated for it prior.  As I said, we are well protected now with fungicides and we are not the only course experiencing this disease.  It is running rampant across the state.  Aerification, verticutting and topdressing are a cultural practice used to prevent this disease.  To aid in healing of these areas, we will be verticutting and topdressing which will be completed this afternoon.  Greens will be bumpy and slow, but if we want to keep them alive this is a necessity. Depending on how quick recovery is, we will likely do this again in two weeks and beginning September 13th we will be core aerifying the greens.   In mid-October we will perform a second core aerification followed by tee and fairway aerification to hopeful prevent any further disease and ultimately have a healthier root system and turf on our putting greens.

1.      Couples Golf – Tonight at 6:00 PM.  Please contact the golf shop if you would like to sign up for the 9-Hole Scramble.

2.      KY Scramble – Sunday, Aug. 7^th at 1:00 PM.  Sign up your favorite member foursome for a Club qualifier to go to the state championship with our Head Golf Professional, Jamie DeKeuster.  The entry fee is $50 pp ($200 per team) and teams will receive a team handicap determined by percentages of ABCD players in the group.

3.      Ladies Intro League – Tuesday, Aug. 9^th at 6:30 PM.  I would like to encourage any ladies of Oxmoor CC who may be interested in learning the game of golf to join us for a FREE 3-week clinic on Tuesday evening.  The clinic will consist of 45-minutes of some basic fundamentals of the game as well as proper etiquette of playing it with friends. 

4.      Guest Day – Thursday, Aug. 11^th – Bring out your friends or family for just $35 including cart fees.  Reservations are strongly encouraged.

5.      Men & Senior Club Championship – Aug. 12^th-14^th – Contact the golf shop if you would like to participate in the 2016 Club Championship contested over 54 holes for all divisions.  The field will be cut to the top 8 scores after 36-holes of competition and those qualifiers will pay a 3^rd round to determine the champions and who will earn themselves a Club parking spot.  The entry fee to play is $25 and the deadline to sign up is Thursday, Aug. 11^th at 4:00 PM

 

Club Notes:

1.      Bourbon Club – Thursday, Aug. 18^th at 6:00 PM. We will have a 9-Hole Par 3 golf event that evening followed by appetizers and some sipping of unique Kentucky brown water from the Barton Distillery.
